Co-constructing meaningful ways

Nicole Dickson is passionate about narrative practices and the spiritual formation/pastoral care concerns of the local congregation.  She has a desire to broaden the ways in which these practices can be used to deepen personal growth, spiritual capacity and the reconciliation of cultures, relationships and conversations in our country.

At the end of 2013 Nicole was asked by Northfield Methodist Church to oversee the development of a new training Institute – the Institute for Creative Conversation.  For more than 17 years the work of Northfield’s Pastoral Care Centre has been informed by Narrative ideas and practices.  The Institute for Creative Conversation explores ways to weave narrative practices and pastoral theology into a meaningful ‘Narrative of Care’, offering narrative training encounters, workshops of learning, reading groups and conversations in order to co-construct meaningful ways of being with others in our local context, cultures and communities.

The qualification that support her work are:

  • MTh (Pastoral Therapy) Unisa, for which she used a pastoral narrative model for her thesis (Cum Laude)
  • BA Hons (Psych) Unisa
  • University of Pretoria & Coram Deo’s two-year Pastoral Narrative Training (Cum Laude)
  • She has attended many workshops and conferences on narrative ideas over the past 12 years which have included learning under Kaethe Weingarten and Stephen Madigan.
  • Through the Institute, she has hosted David Epston, Jeff Zimmerman & Thomas Stone Carlson in South Africa
  • She is a prayer guide trained through the Jesuit Institute of South Africa and facilitates days of reflection and retreats.
  • Nicole presented a paper ‘Creating a Narrative of Care for the work of pastoral communities’ at the SA Conference for Narrative Therapy in 2015.

NG gemeente Mosselbaai
'n Leerprogram vennoot

Sweef altyd hoër | Soar for more
My lewensdoel is om soos ‘n lugballon te wees. En my leuse is “Soar for more”.

Ek het, buiten my graad in teologie, ‘n honneurs graad in Psigologie, sowel as ‘n M.A graad in Sosiologie (narratiewe huweliksberading), asook my PhD graad in die narratiewe hantering van afwykende gedrag.

Tosca Laerskool, Schweizer-Reneke Hoërskool, die PUK en toe Teologie by TUKS, en later ‘n doktorsgraad by Maties was my skoling- en akademiese paadjie. My predikant-werk het by die Dowes in Johannesburg begin, gevorder na diensplig kapelaan by Mariepskop en toe het ek die NG gemeentes Standerton-Wes (10 jr), Roodekrans (12 jr) en sedert 2006 Mosselbaai bedien.

Pastoraat en omgee vir mense was altyd my passie. Deon Bruwer by US se Teologie.

Lei my Heer … daarheen.”

Liefde maak heel
Ek het in 2004 by Coram Deo begin studeer en via rousmart en trauma berading uiteindelik ‘n tuiste gevind by mense wat vasgegvang is an afhanklikheid en ander self-destruktiewe gedrag. Ek doen graag individuele berading maar by hart lê meerendeels by groepwerk.

Ek doseer graag in Pretoria by Coram Deo en beraad ook by Coram Deo in Pretoria. Ek het in 2006 by Coram Deo berading begin doen.

Liefde maak heel!

Pastoral Narrative Therapist

I feel about this work the way I feel about riding my motorcycle (in the words of my 5 year old grand daughter:

“Its like a smile, and a laugh, and the wind and thunder”

I came to Narrative Therapy from the nursing profession, where my area of passion was psychiatric nursing. I have been actively counselling people with a variety of problems for the better part of 35 years (since 1980). Narrative therapy made it possible for me to become more proficient in therapeutic conversations and I became so bewitched by the effects it had on people that I completed a Master and PHD in theology and religious studies with Narrative Practice as praxis.  This work also changed me as a person and continues to enrich me personally; every conversation is a rich, satisfying learning experience.

At Coram Deo I am partly responsible for the teaching of Narrative Theory and Practice, Addictions of all kinds, both substance and process addictions, as well as how to approach psychiatric disorders in socially constructed ways. Intertwined with the theory and practice of narrative therapy is the pastoral side of our work, powered by my theological and religious studies knowledges.

Due to my background and varied experience, I am particularly interested in trauma, loss, conflict in families and relationships, the effects of crime and poverty, the effects of abuse;; women’s issues, spiritual abuse and addiction, both substance and process addictions.  As a result I cant say I’m interested in a specific age group or gender or problem… I just work with people and journey along as a co-traveller, helping to untangle them from the problem power discourses in their lives

I love the challenge of every conversation; the not knowing and the co-discovery of people’s local knowledges, I love seeing the unique outcomes develop into preferred ways of being, into preferred ways of living and people becoming free from the hold The Problem has over them

Eucharisteo: Leef in dankbaarheid / Live in gratitude

[English to follow]

Aan UP verwerf ek ‘n nagraadse kwalifikasie in Afrikaans-Nederlands.

English

I was born in Zambia and completed schooling in Pretoria and Umtata. At the University of Pretoria I did a post-graduate in Afrikaans-Netherlands . Working experience included publishing (fulltime and freelance) and the law environment. For a number of years I was a stay-at-home mom raising three sons and I am so grateful for this privilege that my husband, Dolf, made possible for me.

In 2005-6 I enrolled for the PNT Course at Coram Deo and have been a part-time counsellor at this institution since then. As time proceeded more and more clients struggling with trauma and the effects thereof in their lives crossed my path. I decided to equip myself with more skills in this area, attending courses and workshops (varying from 80 hours to a day). In an effort to try and understand more about the workings of trauma in our lives and bodies, I expose myself to continually reading trauma-related publications and research. But one of the biggest privileges is to learn from clients struggling with the pain of trauma. I stand on holy ground and in awe at the  grit people develop, and about the way in which our Creator “hardwired” us to overcome. I also realise how people’s God-stories during and after trauma become co-authors of their stories of resilience.

A couple of years ago I was challenged to develop a module on Trauma as part of the PNT2 course. With much prayer and  inspiration from Dr Franҁois Wessels the course was birthed and since 2013 I have had the privilege to lecture the Trauma Module at Coram Deo.  It remains a humbling experience.
