About storyography
Stories are all around us in our society, our families, our workplaces, television (whether news or movies) and we all have stories. In some ways of working with people (in whatever context from counselling to communities, to organisations – notably in narrative therapy and in faith communities), stories are seen and worked with as key metaphors. Though important, stories are not necessarily made explicit in these practices. Storyography makes more explicit how stories can be invited into helping practices. It draws participants’ attention to ideas in disciplines that rely significantly on how stories are created (such as film theory) and what is accomplished through it. The programme is ideal for existing pastoral, or narrative therapists but also for those who might be interested in drawing from the rich storehouse of film.

- Narrative therapists, counsellors, psychologists, coaches, mentors, leaders, managers, teachers, pastors, organisational practitioners;
- Anyone with an interest in exploring how our understanding of film theory as it relates to stories might be applied to different helping contexts.
Presenter
Background
The idea and the word storyography comes from Dr Pienaar’s PhD research, some years ago. Ever since then he added to this notion drawing on different art forms. Dr Pienaar, who has worked in a number settings from coaching, counselling, facilitation, consulting and leadership/management, was interested in how narrative ideas could serve all contexts in which he works drawing on stories as a unifying cross-discipinary idea, not only as encountered in a family- or narrative therapy perspective but from a more inclusive understanding.
Outcomes
- Provide an overview of the contexts that stories can be worked with, from counselling, coaching, community work, or in organisations.
- Distinguish between the ideas that inform narrative therapy and other ways of working with stories – towards a responsible synergy.
- Venturing into the world of film from script writing to cinematography to playfully learn how some ideas come to life in the helping-professions.
- Retracing why the notion of story is seen as an organising metaphor in pastoral, narrative therapy, and social science.
- Draw attention to different ways of understanding (hermeneutics), faith and scriptures across religions with the focus on Christianity – the contrast between narrative-knowing and empirical pursuit.

Accreditation
Note that participants may choose to do this programme as a Successfully completed course or an Attendance course. The successfully completed certificate requires an additional reflective assignment which your lecturer might substitute with an in-class assignment. The reflective assignment carries 3 additional CPD points with SignoPro.
Attendance certificates are awarded by the University of Pretoria Enterprises division and requires an additional fee of R200 that is paid separately when required.
