Haemoncology special intake

Welcome to the Coram Deo Pastoral and Narrative therapy training in illness narratives related to the haemoncology special intake!

A special intake at Coram Deo allows for a focus in practice on a specific topic (in this case haemoncology) or helping role other than counselling (for instance, coaching). Learners doing a special intake undertakes aspects of various programmes/courses at Coram Deo but which is customised it in order to fit the purpose of industry or organisational partners.

For who is the special intake?

Any or all of the following:

• Existing practitioners in any of the helping-profession that include but is not limited to nurses, counsellors or psychologists, social workers, ministry professionals (e.g., the pastor, referend, or priest). Generally, a minimum of grade 12 and three years’ work experience is required.
• Those who have completed foundational training in pastoral and, or, narrative therapy.
• Those who register for foundational training in pastoral narrative therapy (year 1) with the intention to focus on narratives of illness dedicated to the context of haemoncology.
• Learners who have been preselected by organisational partners (potentially offered bursaries by such partners) and approved by Coram Deo.

What is the programme duration?

It is a learning programme that can be completed in 1-3 years depending on whether the learner has completed training (foundational training) in pastoral and narrative therapy (mostly one year duration) and how quickly learners can complete the practitioner focus aspect of the programme (often two years).

The programme is generally a two-year programme but can be extended to any number of years up to the completion of the final portfolio. In limited cases with sufficient prior training in pastoral and narrative therapy the programme can be completed in one year.

Programme structure

Learners with no pastoral narrative therapy background will be required to enroll for the Coram Deo first year of the Advanced Programme in Pastoral Narrative Therapy but will then complete their training and receive university recognition under the Advanced Programme for Practitioner Supervision. The latter programme certificate is issued upon successful completion.

The foundational year

Develop a one-year thorough understanding of the paradigm of pastoral narrative therapy before full application during the practitioner focus-year. In limited cases prior training from outside of Coram Deo can be considered as fulfilment of foundational training.

Join one of three weekly class groups (excluding public and school holidays)

• 29 January (Monday evenings online 18:00-21:00), or
• 30 January (Tuesday morning in-person 09:00-12:00 – 143 Leonie Rd Centurion, Pretoria)
• 31 January (Wednesday evenings in-person 18:00-21:00 – 143 Leonie Rd Centurion, Pretoria)

What if you rather want to do year two of the foundational programme  instead of the practice-year (which makes it a special intake)?

After students complete the first year of the foundational training they may wish to continue with those who enrolled for the second year of the Advanced Programme in Pastoral Narrative Therapy. They are welcome to do so but for students who are studying with bursaries from third-party organisations this hold implications for their financial arrangement. We rather suggest you complete the special intake and return later to year two of the pastoral narrative therapy foundational programme.

The practitioner focus-year

The likely day for the special intake to convene during the practitioner focus-year is Tuesday evenings (online). This will roughly be every other week whereas the foundational year convenes weekly.

The focus-year consists of the following:

Supervision requirements and benefits

• 10 one on one supervision meetings with postgraduated mentors/supervisors or select senior counsellors (there is some scope to also use a supervisor not on our list if they agree to some terms and conditions). Three of the ten sessions should be with a specific supervisor while the rest is up to the student.
• 45 hours role/counselling required conversations (Coram Deo does not offer the clients but do work towards creating opportunities throughout the year);
• Be part of a peer learning community that encourages you on your practitioner journey and meet up approximately 18 times during the year (online, select in-person invitations for those who can);
• A file is compiled (which becomes your portfolio) that is at moderated by the University of Pretoria that contains transcripts of several counselling sessions and supervisor feedback. A video recording of a few minutes is encouraged of one of the sessions (of you, not the client which often leads to discussions of identity, empathy and more);
• Recognition by the University of Pretoria;
• Facilitated from a narrative perspective;
• Allowing for spirituality or faith-based conversations where your views are respected;
• Be part of a community that speaks to the inherent loneliness of leaders and other professional roles
• Become more mindful about what makes you a better and balanced practitioner;
• Offers a reflective learning space for challenges practitioners might experience;
• Recognised by CPSC and SignoPro (a cross-professional association);
• Access to the supervision community after the formal programme at a reduced fee in order fulfil requirements that your profession might set for ongoing supervision (or simply aimed at continued practitioner growth).

Continued professional development

A focus on the context on illness narratives, dedicated to haemoncology.

• CareFULL conversations (selection of practical topics informed by partnering organisations): The journey of an oncology patient / Carers, family and relationships / Self care / End of life conversations / Life re-entry conversations / Life with cancer / Cancer and trauma /  The care ecosystem / Faith / Emotional explorations (e.g, guilt)

• Scope of pastoral work

Cost of programme

Programme cost: R23,200 (two-years)

Note the following:

Students who already completed the first year of foundational training at Coram Deo, subtract R10,700 from the tuition fee.

The programme needs at least 10-15 dedicated learners to be presented.

An initiation fee of R425 is payable immediately, with registration, which is seen as part of the full deposit. The remainder of the full deposit (after initiation fee is paid) is R1715 to be settled at the end of January. The remainder of the payment can be scheduled in 6 equal payments over two years or alternatively monthly by debit order over 22 months. A reregistration fee of R2140 applies from the second year of the practitioner-focus year.
